Cape Paige, Korea, twice, and was on his second tour of duty for Operation Iraqi
Freedom.

Matt proudly gave his life on December 26th, 2005 in Baghdad.  Matt was one of a kind.
He loved his job and his country with the same fierceness that he loved his family and
friends.  If you were lucky enough to be his friend, you became a
member of his family.  He was never shy about letting you know how much he loved and
cared about you.  Matt loved everything outdoors:  hunting, fishing, collecting
arrowheads and playing golf.  He loved to BBQ and was quick to invite you over to
share.  He was always ready with a laugh or a joke and you knew that he truly enjoyed
living his life.  He deeply touched everyone he met and our loss can never be measured.

He is survived by his wife Janet, and 4 children, Christina Gabriel, 18, Jarrett Matthew,
15, Danielle Leigh, 6, and Lane Douglas, 8 months, of Killeen, TX; his parents, Dougald L.
and Sara Jo Salter, of Cypress, TX; his sister and her husband, Sara and Jeff Ward, of
Victoria, TX; his in-laws, Doug and Paulette Meyers, of Wyoming, Michigan, and his sister-
in-law, Tracy Meyers, of Wyoming, Michigan.

Matt was one of a kind.  When he was stationed in Iraq my son’s 4th grade class sent him a care
package.  As busy as he was he took the time to send a letter back to the kids.  It really meant a lot
to them.  “We got a letter from a REAL Soldier!”  Matt always had time for the extras in life.  He was a
caring father, a good soldier, a good friend, and a good patriot.  He was one of the good guys.  We
will all feel the loss of Matt.  My prayers go out to his other friends and family.
